How to Choose Your Wardrobe

One of the questions asked most frequently by my clients is "What should I wear?" Photos are an investment that you've most likely spent time and money on so it's no wonder you would want to look AND feel your best!

In hopes to make you feel a little less overwhelmed when it comes time for you to pick your wardrobe, I've listed a few tips!

FOR GIRLS:

Don't be afraid to dress things up a bit! Dresses are the most flattering for women and photograph beautifully. Not only do long dresses add a bit of elegance, but they add movement to your photos as well. Fabrics that are softer, like tulle or chiffon, give a classy and romantic feel. If you decide to go with a pattern choose smaller ones so it doesn't take away from the subject - YOU!

Consider adding a statement piece to your wardrobe - a piece of jewelry or hat. They're a great way to finish off your look. Be careful not to over accessorize as they can become distracting. I tend to find the simplistic approach works best. If you're looking to tie in a color palette, statement accessories are always a win!

FOR GUYS:

Chinos and button-up shirts or henleys look sharp, masculine and tailored in photos. Opt for jeans if you're going for a more casual look but keep in mind that fitted slacks\khakis tend to look the most put together and photograph the best!

Try mixing it up and add a vest, blazer or sport coat. These can be a great way to layer or add some color and texture to your photographs. Plus they give any guy's outfit a handsome finish!

Guys can accessorize too! Consider a belt, timepiece or chain. Again, keep in mind that a minimalistic approach works best when adding statement pieces to your wardrobe.

FOR FAMILIES:

Coordinating is key!! Choose colors that look nice together and avoid matching. Your photos will look far more interesting with a little variation. Think of different tones when deciding on outfits - neutrals, pastels, earth tones, etc. I always suggest having 3-4 core colors in your palette. Start by choosing mom's outfit first (or the youngest) and look at the accent colors in it. You'll use those accent colors to tie in the outfits of everyone else.

Keep it interesting and make everyone's primary color different! Layering outfits is a great way to tie in colors - vests, jackets, sweaters, scarves. When choosing patterns keep them small and only on one family member. When you want to add texture think of lace, knits, chiffon, denim or woven fabrics.

Once you've selected your outfits it's time to finish the look. Hair pieces or headbands are great for little girls. For the boys, consider a vest, jacket, suspenders, ties or bow ties. This is another perfect example of how simple layering can add so much to your photos! I always recommend trying the kiddo's clothing on ahead of time to make sure it fits and they're comfortable (this will save you a lot of headaches come session day)!

*Remember, these are all just ideas and you don't have to implement ALL of them or ANY for that matter. The most important thing is that your photos are a reflection or YOU and/or YOUR FAMILY!!
