*BONUS SUGGESTION*

Navy, cream and tan.

This color scheme pairs great with pastel spring flowers and among the green grass and leaves of summer. The neutral tones are also the perfect compliment to the orange and yellow leaves of fall. Such a classic combination that works well for any season.

Tips for picking your perfect color scheme

Did you see a color scheme above that you loved? Before you hit the store or raid your closet there are a few things you should consider to make sure it's the perfect fit.

1. Location

Always keep the location of your session in mind when picking your color scheme for family portraits. Will you be hiking down trails or standing amongst the wildflowers? Maybe you'll be downtown or in a grassy meadow? Ultimately, the outfits you choose for an edgy urban vibe should look different from what you would choose for a laid back beach session. Decide on your vibe and then decide on your location before choosing your outfits.

2. Your Home

Looking inside your home is often a great place to start when selecting your color scheme. Where do you plan on hanging your portraits? Do you decorate in warm tones or cooler tones? Maybe your décor is more soft and muted? Consider pulling colors from your décor so it's as if your final artwork looks like it was made for your walls!

3. Skin Tones

We all have a favorite color we love to wear and usually gravitate towards what looks best with our skin tone. If you have a cooler skin tone you may find yourself wearing grays, blues and purples. If you find you look best in brown, gold, oranges and reds your skin tone may be on the warmer side.

When you have a family there may be multiple skin tones and you still want to be sure your color scheme compliments everyone. While it may sound impossible, there is a simple solution..

4. Make sure your color scheme looks great on everyone

Maybe you love the pink, tan and cream color scheme above, but pink doesn’t look great on your daughter. You could dress her more dominantly in the neutral anchor color. In this case tan or cream. Add pink shoes or a belt to tie her outfit in. This ensures the pink is not resting up against the skin tone of her face.

Now you have everything you need to pick the perfect color scheme for your family portrait session - time to raid your closet and go shopping!
