3 Tricks to Get Authentic Smiles

Let's be honest: pictures, especially family pictures, can be STRESSFUL. You've spent hours picking out the perfect outfit(s), you've searched Pinterest for ideas and probably even stressed over the weather and location. Maybe you're worried about your dad or husband coming through and smiling, not to mention THE KIDS. We've all been there.. on the other side of the camera and on the count of 3, "Say CHEESE!" I guarantee you this method will not get you the results you're after. But I'm here to assure you it doesn't have to be this stressful!

Here are 3 Tricks that I use during sessions, and that you can use at home, to get genuine smiles every time.

1. Ugly Faces/Serious Faces

You're probably thinking.. how in the world am I going to get a smile with an ugly face?! Let me tell you, it works every time. This trick is great to use for anyone and everyone. Once you notice you're not receiving the authentic smiles you're hoping for, have everyone stop smiling and tell them to give you an ugly face (or serious face). You'll definitely get some goofy looks which is guaranteed to make everyone giggle, especially the kiddos. Faces will be more relaxed and now you're ready to snap those smiles.

2. Talk About Memories

This one is simple but effective and can be used for kids and adults alike. Have your subjects discuss their favorite memory with one another. It can be anything from a family vacation to a silly moment, or for couples it is often how they first met. Genuine smiles come natural when you begin to talk to them about a favorite time with their loved one(s). Kids especially love when it's something silly Mommy or Daddy have done ;)

3. Whisper Something Funny

This is probably my favorite trick because it always ends with some great laughs. During family sessions I ask the kids to whisper something silly in Mommy or Daddy's ear. The great part about it is you never know what kids will come up with! Although this isn't something silly, having a child whisper "I love you" is a great trick too. 100% guaranteed to get a smile out of the receiver every time :) For couples, have one person whisper to the other their favorite cereal in their sexiest voice. GAME CHANGER! Not only do they end up laughing, but I usually do too!
